Our group was formed in 2010 when one enthusiastic resident sent out a flyer to neighbours and residents of Calton Gardens, Calton Walk, Alton Place, St Mark’s Gardens, Alexandra Road and Holloway. The action resulted in a meeting attended by around 50 or so local residents anxious to talk about local issues of concern and to get together to meet other members of the immediate community.

Since we were formed, we have continued to hold a range of activities such as regular litter picks, community picnics and barbecues, snow and ice clearance in winter and community film evenings. In the past, we launched the Beechen Bees project which prompted a series of local gardening initiatives and gained us an RHS “In Your Neighbourhood” Award.
There is no official membership, and everybody from the area is welcome to join in any of our activities. We like to welcome new residents and help them settle into the area with help and information.

The St. Mark’s Road group provides a focal point for arranging community events and dealing with local issues. The group first came together to organise a Jubilee Street party in 2012.  Since then we’ve joined the other local groups to become widcombewest.  Since then we have organising lots of local fun events – including community Christmas lunches, barbecues, Ceilidhs, wine tastings, local history talks and bulb planting – as well as providing joint input to the St Mark’s Community Centre committee. We also work with B&NES, local councillors, the Widcombe Association and others on issues specific to the road such as litter and road safety.

We want to hear about any concerns or ideas for making the road a fun and caring place to live.

The Lower Wells Road Community Group aims to address local issues by representing residents’ views to local councillors and B&NES officers. We work with the other local residents’ groups, particularly with the Calton and Holloway estate and St Mark’s Road with whom we share this website.

The group formed in order to establish more of a community in the area and to tackle the obvious problem of neighbourhood neglect.
We feel that our stretch of Wells Road, as well as being where we live, also acts as a gateway into the City of Bath for students and the many visitors who stay in the local hotels and B&Bs and we would like it to be more welcoming.

We are an informal group with no membership fees and we meet when there are issues to discuss or when we arrange activities: for example, a group barbecue was held on the green slope last summer where members brought food to share and were treated to a saxophone solo by one of the group.
Our membership is mainly drawn from residents of lower Wells Road and St Mary’s Buildings, but we welcome anyone who shares our aims to improve the area.

We would encourage anyone from the area who would like to be involved to contact:
