New Pedestrian Crossing

newcrossingOur new pedestrian crossing is the latest development on the Rossiter Road Scheme. Improved pedestrian access from central Bath to Widcombe Parade, St Mark’s Road and Lyncombe Hill with both stairs and ramp this provides a safer and more convenient way for visitors and residents of Widcombe West to enjoy our neighbourhood.

The road works continue however. Further information about the “Vision for Widcombe”/Rossiter Road changes can be found on the Widcombe Association website.

Beehive Visits

beehivesWe are lucky to have some new neighbours who have recently moved to Bath from West London – a couple of colonies of honey bees belonging to Andy and Amelia Hepburn of 31 Calton Walk. Andy has kindly offered to host small groups to accompany him on his weekend maintenance Bee Visits. The hives are a few minutes’ walk away.

The Bee Visits will normally take place on Saturdays or Sundays when Andy carries out his routine inspection and maintenance of the hives. The dates available this month are: July 18th and 25th.

Andy has had to limit the number of visitors to FOUR at a time. If you wish to join us on a visit please CLICK HERE to visit the booking site and reserve your place.

To find out more about what the visits entail and conditions, and before trying to book yourself onto one of the dates, please read the attached notes.

St Mark’s Summer Barbecue 2015

bbq1bbq2Our summer barbecue was held in the garden of St Mark’s Community Centre, on July 4th. All those who attended must agree this social event was a great success. We were fortunate to have perfect weather and a good turn out of regular residents as well as a few newcomers and visitors. Thanks to all of you who donated raffle prizes, we made £44.00! And thanks to everyone for your help and support in making it a great success.

Traffic and Parking Update

Our councillor for Widcombe Ian Gilchrist reports that the new B&NES cabinet member for transport Tony Clarke is currently reviewing proposals for improving the traffic and parking arrangements in St Mark’s Road. The proposals should hopefully then be shared with local residents for comment within the next couple of weeks.

For more information in the meantime please contact Keith Palmer at 7 St Mark’s Road palmerkeith9@hotmail.com.

Widcombe Parade Street Party 2015

WAprog_frontThe Widcombe Parade Street Party was held on the 7th of June to celebrate the beginning of a new era for Widcombe Parade, Bath. Finally free from the noise, pollution and inconvenience of through traffic!  The party was organised by and for the community, but we warmly welcomed about 8000 visitors from other parts of Bath and beyond to come and celebrate with us.

The street part was a huge success. We enjoyed food and drink from our pubs, restaurants and cafes; live music and entertainment on three stages, with contributions from our schools, community groups and choirs, as well as our city’s best buskers and bands of all musical genres; games, competitions, raffle, street theatre and exhibitions, in fact plenty for all the family to enjoy. £1,500 was raised for Action on Hearing Loss and £1,100 raised for Widcombe Junior School’s Great Hall Project.

The street party was sponsored by The Widcombe Association well as several other local businesses such as Bath Honda, Wessex Water, Mayden and Pritchards.

Community Barbecue

St Mark’s Community Centre

Saturday 4th July between 5:30 and 9:30 pm

For practical reasons we decided to abandon the idea holding our own brunch the same day as the Widcombe Parade Street Party on June 7th. So now the focus is now on the next community social event.

Save the Date!

All welcome! Just bring your own food and drink and use the barbecue facilities as you need.
In addition to the barbecue at the Centre, a few extra barbecues will be needed on the day, so if you have one to lend please let us know.

We are hoping to hold a raffle and we possibly arrange live music, if not a sound system and recorded music will be available. More details to come.

Improving Widcombe

Suggestions were made for Improving Widcombe at the inaugural Widcombe Association project meeting, held on 16th December 2014.
You will see from the notes from the meeting that suggested improvements have, for practical reasons, been grouped into activities relating to ‘People’, ‘Purpose’ or ‘Place’ so that the limited resources available to the Association can be focussed most effectively.

THE ROLE OF ARCH
It is the intention that ARCH shall:

  • keep members informed about the Improving Widcombe project by circulating the WA minutes of meetings and any related notices; and
  • provide members with the opportunity to make additional suggestions as to how Widcombe could be improved and/or to take an active part in developing or implementing ideas for improvement.

ACTION
If you would like to make suggestions for Improving Widcombe (and ‘Widcombe’ includes all of the ARCH area and much more!) or would like to participate actively in any capacity at all please contact ARCH committee members or contact the Widcombe Association directly. Now is the time to get your voice heard whilst the project plans are at the development stage.
